Business to Business (B2B)

The aim of these APIs is to allow system-to-system integration. Examples include interfaces to determine stock availability, placing an order to purchase a product, or sharing enterprise data with affiliates or partners. Traditional mechanisms to achieve this type of integration required custom, purpose-built interfaces and dedicated network infrastructure, in the form of leased lines, between consumer and provider. As a result, there was significant cost and time impact for the upfront provisioning. Although this can be achieved by configuring a Virtual Private Network (VPN) between the parties which uses public network infrastructure, it can also be achieved through the use of a security certificate to simplify the integration pattern as illustrated in Figure 6-2.
